Building Deck & DIY Platform for a Grill
BBQ Basics: Techniques You Need to Know

Grilling Tips

Weber charcoal grills and gas barbecues give you great grilled results every time because they are designed to give you ultimate control of your grilling temperature and cooking method. Here we explain the secret to great grilling.

Grilling Tips
Direct Method

The Direct Method is similar to broiling. Food is cooked directly over the heat source. For even cooking, food should be turned once halfway through the grilling time. Use the Direct method for foods that take less than 25 minutes to cook: like steaks, chops, kabobs, sausages and vegetables. Direct cooking is also necessary to sear meats. Searing creates that wonderful crisp, caramelized texture where the food hits the grate. It also adds nice grill marks and flavour to the entire food surface. Steaks, chops, chicken pieces, and larger cuts of meat all benefit from searing.

Grilling Tips
Indirect Method

The Indirect Method is similar to roasting, but with the added benefits of that grilled texture, flavour, and appearance you can't get from an oven. Heat rises, reflects off the lid and inside surfaces of the grill, and slowly cooks the food evenly on all sides. The circulating heat works much like a convection oven, so there's no need to turn the food. Use the Indirect Method for foods that require 25 minutes or more of grilling time or for foods that are so delicate that direct exposure to the heat source would dry them out or scorch them.

Grilling safety requires placing your grill on a flat, level surface that remains free of combustible materials that could catch fire should you experience grill flare-ups or your fire produces sparks.
Building a simple deck for your grill can provide a safe location to cook outdoors without worry. Choose from several different decking materials to build a deck that fits your style and level of building experience.
Regardless of which simple deck style you choose to use for your grill, you must prepare the ground beneath the area. You may need to level the surface if you intend to install the deck on the ground rather than install a raised deck.
You can find a variety of snap together decking tiles to use when building a simple grilling deck. These tiles are made from different hardwood and composite materials, such as teak, eucalyptus, recycled woods and recycled plastics.

What is Azek Decking? An Overview

Azek Brownstone deck with Acacia border and custom White Vinyl railings

AZEK Decking

AZEK Building Products manufacture capped polymer and capped composite decking under the TimberTech® product brand. Complementary products like railing, trim and molding, porches, lighting, under decking drain systems, accessories, and paver products match the deck styles and are categorized under their Pro and Edge lines.

TimberTech AZEK™ composite decking is made of PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) capped with a scratch and stain-resistant polymer. Colors in this product will not fade, allowing homeowners to retain the same color over many years. The interior core of AZEK boards are made from 100% recycled plastic, which ads rigidity and impermeability to water and rot.

AZEK decking comes in three design collections—Vintage, Arbor, and Harvest. The Vintage Collection is the designer series with colors, styles, and three board widths to complement architectural features seen in mid-century and modern home designs. The Arbor Collection specifically mimics natural hardwood textures in colors described as “exotic.” The Harvest Collection is designed and priced to compete with other composite decking companies with embossed warm colors mimicking traditional hardwood texture...

AZEK has developed an entire line of materials and accessories to streamline the look of an outdoor home improvement project. If your dream deck project extends past a platform and railings, AZEK offers cladding to integrate the style of your deck with the surrounding walls.

AZEK is perfect if you want a modern wood plank look on the exterior of your home or patio fencing. The flooring for the Porch line is designed with an interlocking tongue-in-groove system to retain a traditional porch appearance of minimal gaps between the boards.

Decks that Last a Lifetime

AZEK TimberTech® decking products will not blister, peel, flake, crack, split, or rot for 20 years. However, careful maintenance is required to ensure the deck will last - or certain damage may occur. For example, staining, fading, scratching, and discoloration. Reports of suntan lotion and bug repellent causing discoloration to AZEK surfaces are common. However, AZEK stands behind their materials with an impressive warranty package.

How to Maintain Your AZEK Decking

AZEK decks are easily cleaned with a power washer on moderate intensity. The company sells a mild liquid cleaner that is applied with a medium nylon bristle brush. Black scuffs and pen marks can be removed with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

A mild cleaner (isopropyl alcohol, glycerin, and propylene glycol) mixed with water work on sticky stains like pine sap. Do NOT use solvent-based cleaners containing acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, nPB, or trichloroethylene (TCE). These will damage the finish of the AZEK trim.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

2019 brought good news from AZEK regarding their commitment to the environment. The company is serious about using quality recycled materials and reducing their carbon footprint. In April, AZEK Building Products opened a $25M recycling plant in Ohio to convert discarded polyethylene into material for their own manufacturing plant nearby.

The new facility converts post-consumer and post-industrial goods like plastic wrap, detergent bottles, and milk jugs into a granular material used for composite decking. By the end of the first year, they hope to process as much as 100 million pounds of plastic with the capability to double that within another year.

These recycled materials go directly into their Pro and Edge composite boards which contain a 100 percent recycled resin. Controlling the materials that go into AZEK decking down to the smallest formulations, allows the company to guarantee the product’s quality for consumers.

The processing plant is designed to efficiently use power, water, heating, cooling, and lighting. For example, a closed-loop water filtration system to reuse and recycle hundreds of gallons of water daily.

Careful consumers focused on style, quality, and the environment will appreciate how TimberTech AZEK™ has meticulously thought through everything a builder would consider when selecting outdoor decking materials.
